Triplul dezastru din Japonia, cutremur-tsunami-accident nuclear, va fi mai mult ca sigur subiectul multor texte narative în lunile ce vor urma. The New Yorker a publicat deja unul (Aftershocks - A nation bears the unbearable.) care redă atmosfera post-dezastru din Japonia, dovada că astfel de texte se pot face și cu deadline foarte scurt. 

On a hilltop overlooking the ruined city of Rikuzentakata, Jimbo met a semi-retired man in his sixties, who had heard the tsunami siren and packed his mother and dog into his truck and driven two miles inland, the waves churning in his rearview mirror. “He lost his house, and it’s not covered by insurance,” Jimbo said. “His family, fortunately, survived. I said, ‘What will you do next?’ He said he would like to think there will be some assistance from the local government. But all he could think was: The city-assembly office is gone. The mayor could be dead. The only thing he can turn to is the government. But his local government is gone.”

Un alt text care a circulat pe net în zilele de după cutremurul din Japonia este “How a Tokyo Earthquake Could Devastate Wall Street and the World Economy.”, scris de Michael Lewis în 1989. Textul e interesant pentru că pe atunci Japonia domina economia lumii, iar un cutremur în Tokyo, precum cel din 1923 care a ras aproape complet orașul, ar fi putut avea efecte devastatoare asupra restului lumii. În a doua parte a articolului Lewis dezvoltă un scenariu de genul “ce ar fi dacă”. Interesant ca abordare, chiar dacă, de data asta, lucrurile nu s-au întâmplat așa cum credea el acum 21 de ani. Asta și pentru că Japonia nu mai ocupă același loc în economia globală.
